ABOUT THE COLLABORATIVE

The Mississippi River Collaborative is a partnership of environmental organizations and legal centers in states that border the Mississippi River, as well as other regional and national groups, which works to reduce pollution entering the Mississippi River and its tributaries, as well as the Gulf of Mexico.

The Collaborative harnesses the resources and expertise of its diverse organizations by strategically focusing on state and regional water quality protection in the Mississippi River Basin, and by increasing the organizational, legal, and technical capacity of participating groups to meet existing challenges and to effectively implement new initiatives of the Collaborative.

Specifically we work on the following objectives:

  • Reducing nutrient pollution in the Mississippi River and Northern Gulf of Mexico;
  • Increasing the focus of Collaborative members on agricultural sources of nutrient pollution;
  • Ensuring that the policy of antidegradation is implemented in the water quality permitting process in each of the Basin states;
  • Building the capacity of Collaborative participants to advocate for no discharge systems; and
  • Extending the impact of the Collaborative through improved communications with the press and the public.

The Mississippi River Collaborative is an initiative of the McKnight Foundation.
